Team Arkansas was created in 2010 to raise money to fund research aimed at finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.
The concept of Team Arkansas started in the fall of 2010 when Renee Dean, the then Executive Director for Arkansas, approached 3 Board members - Charlie Penix, David Conrad and JDRF Arkansas Board President Karen Halbert -concerning the JDRF Ride Program to raise research funds.
Penix, Conrad and Halbert are cyclists so they researched the program and decided it would be a good addition to the local volunteer effort to provide support to JDRF Arkansas . It was decided it would be more impactful to form a team and invite others to join - as a result Team Arkansas was born.
The first Team Arkansas JDRF Ride was in October 2011 in Death Valley (shown at left). There were 16 team members who committed to raise $4,000 per rider for a total of $64,000. Although the $4,000 was an individual rider commitment, the team committed to raise the $64,000 as a team. It was a “no rider left behind” team commitment. An all for one and one for all philosophy that the team continues to practice.
